Short description

The Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies (wiiw), with financial support from the Global Development Network (GDN), the Austrian Ministry of Finance and the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (Austrian Central Bank), announces a SEE research competition within the framework of the wiiw Global Development Network Southeast Europe (wiiw GDN-SEE) research project.

Additional information about the programme

Proposals are invited from economists and other social scientists. Projects with a significant commercial aspect or those that seek the funding of the dissemination of previous results (such as book preparation) rather than original research are explicitly excluded.

Proposals must be postmarked by 31 May 2014.

For the competition, the following topic has been identified:

In the context of development theory, appropriate policies that target (i) productivity, (ii) fixed costs, (iii) wages and (iv) employment need to be designed. Those should address the key actors: firms, banks, and states. These agents of development could be looked at and compared across countries and regions. Firm development, trade, and learning by doing could form one grouped area of research. Financial controls or integration, i.e. the role of banks and financial markets would be another. Institutions and policies, e.g. investments in fixed costs, various protectionist measures, and interference with the price mechanism could be the third.
