Swedish EU presidency to promote innovation and ERA
The Swedish presidency of the Council of the European Union begins on 1 July and will continue to the end of 2009. The new presidency's work programme has been published, clearly outlining its priorities over the next six months. In addition to tackling the urgent challenges of economy, employment and climate (they will work towards the adoption of a new climate agreement during the international climate negotiations in Copenhagen in December), the work programme stresses strengthening competitiveness by investing in research and education as well as improving the governance of the European Research Area (ERA). |
EVAL-INCO – Evaluators database for International Cooperation
EVAL-INCO is a database of evaluators which is used to facilitate the assessment of proposals for research projects, submitted in the context of the Joint Calls of regional ERA-NETs. Researchers are invited to register for this evaluators database online. |
Commissioner Potočnik visits Serbia
On June 29, 2009 Janez Potočnik, European Commissioner for Science and Research, participated in an EU Research Information Event in Belgrade. He addressed scientists, business representatives and representatives from Serbian Ministries on the importance of increasing Serbia's research cooperation, especially within the European Research Area (ERA), and he announced a special call for proposals for the Western Balkan region (see related news). |

With this survey we contribute to the policy dialogue in the region and provide governments in the Western Balkan countries (WBC) and the European Commission as well as recommendations for the implementation of research and innovation policy and for financing projects in the ICT field. |

Cross-border Programme Serbia - Montenegro
The Cross-border Programme Serbia – Montenegro under the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA) Component II has been published on June 25, 2009 with a deadline on September 23, 2009. Budget for the call is 1,980,000 EUR. Based on the Cross-border programme Serbia – Montenegro, single calls for proposals will be launched at a regular interval on both sides of the border in order to select cross-border cooperation projects that contribute to the strategy's objectives and fall into identified priorities and measures. |

As the Czech presidency comes to an end, sciencebusiness bulletin covers the an interview with Bjarne Kirsebom, Minister responsible for Research at the Swedish Permanent Representation in Brussels, looking at the R&D policy issues Sweden intends to tackle over the six months of its Presidency: "The European Research Area (ERA) lacks the tools it needs to work in a comprehensive and transparent way", he said. |
Apply now for "The Best ICT4EE Project Award"
The European Commission's DG INFSO has launched a competition in the field of ICT for energy efficiency - "The Best ICT4EE Project Award". The winner will be selected by a combination of both internet voting and an expert jury. The aim of the competition is to promote innovation in ICT that will contribute to substantial and measurable improvements in energy efficiency, and that have the potential to provide visible and convincing showcases for investment by business, citizens or both. Research in Industry and Academia Grant Currently Open
The “Research in Industry and Academia” Grant is a Croatian grant aiming at increasing mobility of young scientists and experts between academia and Croatian industry as well as to strengthen long-term cooperation between two sectors. Health Research in the Western Balkans
The partners of WBC-INCO.NET and relevant experts compiled reports on the research system in the field of health for each Western Balkan country. The reports have been discussed in a workshop for priority setting and resulted in the definition of common priorities for the field. |

Conclusions of meeting of Steering Platform on Research for Western Balkan Countries
The Steering Platform for Research for the Western Balkan Countries met in Liblice on 28 May 2009. The Platform was co-chaired by the Czech Presidency of the Council of the European Union – which hosted it – the Republic of Albania on behalf of the Western Balkan Countries, and the European Commission. The Conclusions of the Platform meeting are published in the following article. The chairs and participants are dedicated to follow-up on the conclusions and invite all readers to also contribute with their activities. Further integration of the Western Balkans to the European Research Area is an aim to be jointly achieved! |

EC Launches New Information Portal on Health Research
The European commission has launched a new information portal for the FP7 Health research theme. Specific sub-sites of the Health Portal are devoted to Health Biotechnology, Genomics & Systems Biology, Medical Research, Infectious Diseases, Public Health, and Innovative Medicines Initiative. Dedicated focus pages explore the overarching issues applicable across the theme. Among others, the website contains information on upcoming events, policy issues, ongoing EC-funded research projects and an online library. Information on open calls will also be made available. |

Research Executive Agency Officially Granted Autonomy by the European Commission
On June 15, 2009, the Research Executive Agency (REA) was officially granted its administrative and operational autonomy by the European Commission. The REA is located in Brussels, Belgium, and will become the biggest of the 6 existing EU executive agencies with a planned staff of 558 by 2013. It will control a EUR 6.5 billion budget, which represents around 12% of the budget for the current EU Framework Programme for Research (FP7). Although FP7 runs until 2013, the REA is expected to remain in place until 2017 in order to manage projects funded during FP7... |
