Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy - AustriaBack
Within the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy (BMWFW), the Department for International Research Co-operation (II/6) is responsible for WBC-INCO.NET-. Department II/6 is the co-ordination node for bilateral, multilateral and regional initiatives for research projects, research programmes and international S&T agreements. Furthermore it is responsible for the Austrian science and research liaison offices abroad, for Austrian membership in international organisations, for ESFRI, EU-INCO, ASEM, INTAS and for Austrian initiatives in the area research for development.
Because of its geographical location, Austria has deep roots and excellent historically grown relations with the Balkan region. Therefore the BMWFW has played a very active role in supporting the integration of the WBC into the ERA and in assisting the building up of sustainable structures to increase their successful participation in the EU-FPs. The BMWFW is a very experienced and active partner for the WBC in their interregional political dialogue with each other as well as with the EU. Together with the EC, the Austrian Presidency launched the Steering Platform on Research for the Western Balkan Countries in 2006 in the course of the Austrian EU presidency. The BMWFW is also deeply involved in the SEE-ERA.NET (South East European ERA.NET) project, which turned out to be a very important tool for fostering research cooperation with the region. Beyond this, the BMWFW has established Austrian Science Offices in the Balkan region to support bilateral and multilateral cooperative activities by e. g. organising information events and publishing calls for cooperation project proposals.
